What is OASIS E?  How many Versions of OASIS Are there?

Every year we wait with baited breath to find out what changes are coming to home health agencies. There are 4 versions of OASIS.  Each iteration has a new letter next to it. Some versions have updates such as OASIS D to D1, which introduced or removed a few questions, but not significant enough to change versions.    CMS Announced that OASIS D1 would be replaced by OASIS E.  Because of the public health emergency, OASIS E implementation was delayed and will start Jan 1, 2023.  Follow this link to view the OASIS E document from CMS.

OASIS is an anacronym for Outcome and Assessment Information Set.  CMS uses this information to track certain information over a long period of time.  The National Institute of Health says the purpose of OASIS "The Outcome and Assessment Information Set (OASIS) is a comprehensive assessment designed to collect information on nearly 100 items related to a home care recipient’s demographic information, clinical status, functional status, and service needs (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services [CMS], 2009a). The OASIS is completed upon admission, discharge, transfer, and change in condition for all Medicare and Medicaid, non-maternity, and non-pediatric beneficiaries. OASIS data are collected by a home care clinician (e.g., nurse or therapist) via direct observation and interview of the care recipient and/or caregiver."  Find the full link here

How Many New Items Are There in OASIS E?

The short answer is 27.  There are 27 new items on OASIS E compared to OASIS D1.  Often, an OASIS Item is removed, only to be replaced by a question or questions seeking more specific information.  For Example, M1040 has been removed and been replaced by A1005 (Ethnicity), A1010 (Race), and A1110 (Language).  Here is a list of Items that are new, and what OASIS the question applies to.
